Angel's story`

Early yesterday morning Susan got a telephone call from a lady doctor who lived in Casablanca but worked in Mohamedia, some 30 kms to the north. She was clearly upset as she had seen a white mule in an appalling condition on her way to work. She had telephone SPANA in Casablanca but unfortunately they were closed. A friend told her about us and she took a chance by contacting Jarjeer immediately. The mule couldn't be found that morning but late afternoon the doctor had located it again where it was walking round with a brown mule who was in much better condition.

We said that we could send transport from our village but not until the following morning. However it turned out that the doctor contacted the local Caid (the administrative head of an area and usually a lawyer) who immediately went to meet her at the site and they discovered that both mules were owned. In the meantime Susan had contacted the doctor and said that we would take both the mules as they seemed to be bonded and were clearly friends. However the brown mule was in good condition and still working. The owner refused to surrender it but the Caid insisted on taking the white mule whom we have called Angel, the name given to her by the doctor. The Caid personally spent three hours organising transport and Angel arrived here at 3 o'clock this morning. Congratulations to the Caid for having the courage to confiscate Angel.

She is in a very poor state so she's had a very good shampoo with Moroccan black soap and her wounds have been treated. We are waiting for the deep wound on her face to dry thoroughly from her shower and then we will apply a special cream. She is having antibiotics and whilst we gave her a treat of some carrots we are watching her feed very carefully. She will have some olive oil which should help clear any plastic that she has eaten while rummaging around rubbish tips. We can never promise anything but we do hope for a good outcome.
